Please note this is just my MHO:
I haven't really had any problems with dd and the emails. She has met girls from all over the country (yes, they usually exchange states, first names and ages )I think this is more to group their ages rather than emailing girls much older/younger than themselves because of appropraiteness. Also - I have a wall map in the family room which we look up the places her friends are in which DD thinks is great.
DD and her little friends even set up an email paydate on Saturday, where they used the emails to communicate with each at a around the country tea party.
From what I can tell the parents of these girls do monitor incoming/outgoing emails closely (I think). I have to admit though I have not had to delete but one or two emails (more from gossiping about others) but then I did block the girl.
Also, I have met some of these families while at the Elizabeth opening so maybe we are just more relaxed about it.

Most of the emails are like this -
"Hi my name is ???? Would you like to be my friend? I have xyz dolls, who do you have?"
I do have to admit that being busy I forget to approve the messages and so I lapse but I think it is mostly all of us.
I made a decision today to make it my friday chore to read and aprove all messages so that dd can read her mail and respond back on friday's. I am sorry to say I had allowed my manners to lapse from being busy.
